To control who sees your content while you are away, you must distinguish between terminating a local session and altering your account state. Reporting by The Arizona Republic highlighted this point when investigating social media breaks: temporary account deactivation removes an account from public view, whereas logging out leaves it untouched.

Temporary deactivation instructs Meta to mark your user database record as dormant. When another user searches your handle or navigates to your custom URL, Instagram serves a standard "User not found" error page. Your comments, likes, tags, and archived reels vanish from public threads.
The data is not destroyed. It sits frozen on Meta’s storage clusters until you input your credentials again. Logging out does not trigger this suspension. Logging out simply walks you out of the administrative booth while leaving the showroom lights fully illuminated.
