By the time Arnold relocated to California in 1968 to pursue professional bodybuilding under Joe Weider, the gap between the brothers had widened into an ocean. Arnold was winning Mr. Universe titles in London and Santa Monica, whereas Meinhard remained in Austria, drifting into heavy drinking to cope with lingering family tensions and unresolved trauma.

On the night of May 20, 1971, the tension turned fatal. Driving near Kitzbühel, Austria, Meinhard lost control of his vehicle while heavily intoxicated, swerved off the road, and crashed into a concrete telephone pole. He was killed instantly at the age of 24. Police reports confirmed that high blood alcohol levels and excessive speed caused the collision. He had not been wearing a seatbelt.

Arnold did not return to Austria to attend Meinhard’s funeral, a decision that generated public scrutiny for years. In his autobiography Total Recall and his 2023 documentary, Arnold acknowledged that facing the emotional devastation in his hometown while trying to build an empire in Venice Beach felt impossible at the time. Yet the grief lingered. Arnold later stated that his father’s harsh treatment and psychological instability played an undeniable role in driving Meinhard toward the bottle, calling his brother’s death the devastating result of an environment designed to crush anyone who showed vulnerability.
