What Is Pd for Glasses? Everything to Know Before Ordering Online
Pupillary distance is not a static number across all visual tasks. The spacing between your pupils actively changes based on how far away your focal target is located.
When you focus on distant highway signs or a movie screen, your lines of sight run parallel to each other. This baseline is your distance PD. However, when you shift your gaze to a book, smartphone, or laptop screen, both eyes rotate inward toward your nose, a biological process called ocular convergence.
Because of this convergence, your reading glasses PD (near PD) is consistently smaller than your distance PD, typically narrowing by 3 mm to 4 mm. For a person with an uncorrected distance PD of 64 mm, their reading PD will sit near 60 mm or 61 mm.
Entering a distance PD when buying dedicated computer glasses or reading lenses forces the eyes to fight outward optical distortion while the ocular muscles attempt to pull inward. This visual conflict produces headaches and dry eyes within minutes of close-up desk work.
