The literal origin of the word has nothing to do with modern partisan warfare. In 1984, director Douglas Cheek released C.H.U.D., a gritty cult horror film set in the underbelly of Manhattan. Within the narrative, the acronym stood for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, mutated beings created when the Nuclear Regulatory Commission secretly disposed of toxic waste in municipal sewers. A secondary bureaucratic backronym, "Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal," added a veneer of bureaucratic satire to the creature feature.

For roughly three decades, the word stayed parked in genre-movie fandom. An early Urban Dictionary definition logged in the early 2000s described it simply as an unappealing or gross individual, loosely honoring the rubber-suited monsters from the film. The word had a blunt, phonetically ugly cadence. The heavy consonant cluster felt guttural and crude, mimicking the exact kind of subterranean creature Hollywood envisioned during the late Cold War.
