Tiktok Direct Recharge Updates: the Platform's Move to Sidestep Mobile Commissions
Livestream monetization hinges on micro-transactions. When a fan sends a "Universe" gift during a broadcast, they unleash an animation worth hundreds of dollars. The creator receives Diamonds, which convert into fiat currency, while TikTok retains roughly 50 percent of the gross transaction. When an in-app payment system processes that coin purchase, Apple or Google extracts another 30 percent from the gross upfront.
That cut proved untenable at scale. In response, ByteDance constructed the TikTok web store, a lightweight browser gateway dedicated to selling coins directly via standard web payment gateways. Because standard card rails cost between 1.5% and 3.5% per swipe, ByteDance preserves its gross margins while offering consumers an undeniable in-app purchase discount on desktop. A bundle of 10,000 coins that runs roughly $140 on an iPhone sells for approximately $106 through the web portal. The mathematical reality has turned casual gifters into web shoppers overnight.
