The Rise of the Snowball Kiss Trend: How Tiktok Resurfaced the Slang
The phrase did not originate online. Sociolinguists and adult film historians trace the snowballing slang origin back to 1970s and 1980s queer communities and underground adult entertainment scenes, where specialized terms developed to describe explicit fetishes.
The slang broke into broad public awareness in 1994 with the release of Kevin Smith's breakout indie comedy Clerks. In one of the movie's most quoted dialogue exchanges, characters Dante Hicks and Randal Graves casually debate the mechanics and boundaries of the act behind the counter of a New Jersey convenience store. Smith's dialogue stripped the taboo from the vocabulary, embedding it into Gen X pop culture references and paving the way for late-night comedy references throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
When crowdsourced websites launched in the late 1990s, the phrase was among the earliest entries logged on Urban Dictionary in 2003, long before smartphone feeds made shock searches a competitive spectator sport.
