Is Bad Bunny's 'Dtmf' Political? Examining the Real Meaning Behind the English Lyrics
By Elena Rostova
Understanding Benito's music requires recognizing that San Juan is never mere set dressing. The city is an active participant in his songs. References scattered throughout "DtMF" touch on local geography, quiet drives, and spaces that feel altered under the weight of outside development.
Across urban centers in Puerto Rico, historical landmarks and residential enclaves have witnessed intense churn over the 2022, 2026 period. Local venues where independent reggaeton and Latin trap flourished now compete against high-end resorts and seasonal rentals. When the lyrics dwell on the regret of not saving visual evidence of the way things used to be, San Juan listeners understand that urgency personally.
The song captures the uneasy reality of the modern Caribbean: a paradise packaged for visitors while lifelong residents struggle under failing infrastructure and rising living costs. The sadness in "DtMF" comes from knowing that once an ecosystem changes, no amount of wishing can reconstitute it.
