Inside the Visual Archive: How Louis Vuitton Turned Final Fantasy’s Lightning into a Haute Couture Icon
Nicolas Ghesquière took creative control of Louis Vuitton womenswear in 2013 with a mandate to modernize the heritage house. He possessed an open obsession with retro-futurism, science fiction, and classic Japanese pop culture. His runway presentation for Spring-Summer 2016 opened with references to Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell. He sent human models down the catwalk wearing futuristic leather armor, fingerless biker gloves, and metallic headbands modeled directly after anime tiaras.
Physical garments, however, were only half the vision. Ghesquière sought a muse that transcended flesh and blood. He wanted an avatar capable of expressing post-human elegance.
"Lightning is the perfect avatar for a global, heroic woman and for a world where social networks and communications are seamlessly woven into our lives," Ghesquière noted during the campaign's global rollout. Rather than drawing inspiration from subcultures at a safe distance, the artistic director invited Square Enix directly into the Maison’s visual canon. Lightning did not merely dress like a Louis Vuitton model; she occupied the billboard positions reserved for Hollywood royalty.
