From Breakout Star to Arrowverse Mainstay: Jesse Rath’s Career and Life Timeline
By David Miller
When Rath debuted as Querl Dox, better known as Brainiac 5, or "Brainy", in the third season of Supergirl, the role was conceived as a recurring guest spot. The character’s awkward logical deductions, neurodivergent-coded vulnerability, and distinct physical presence resonated strongly with both writers and audiences. By Season 4, producers elevated Rath to a series regular, where he remained through the series finale in 2021.
A significant driver of the actor’s personal search traffic stems directly from this Arrowverse tenure. The show paired Brainy with Nia Nal, the heroic Dreamer portrayed by Nicole Maines. The narrative arc, affectionately dubbed "Brainia" across social platforms, became one of the most celebrated romantic storylines in late-stage Arrowverse history. Their chemistry was electric, filled with sharp dialogue and earnest emotional stakes that fueled thousands of fan theories.
Inevitably, some viewers conflated on-screen devotion with off-screen romance. Maines and Rath formed an enduring, documented professional friendship, frequently appearing in convention panels, lighthearted backstage Instagram stories, and reunion livestreams. However, both performers have consistently maintained that their dynamic is strictly platonic and professional. Rath has never dated his co-star, leaving the search for an off-screen partner entirely unresolved by show-related clues.
