The Luis Díaz Father Kidnapping Saga: Inside the Ordeal That Shook Global Soccer
The afternoon of Saturday, October 28, 2023, began ordinarily in Barrancas, a dusty municipality nestled in Colombia’s northern department of La Guajira. Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, were driving near a neighborhood service station when four armed men on motorcycles intercepted their vehicle. Brandishing handguns, the assailants forced their way inside, speeding toward the rugged Venezuelan border.
Colombian authorities responded rapidly. Within hours, a combined police and army dragnet sealed the border crossings. Police cornered the abductors near the rural district of San Pedro, prompting them to abandon Cilenis Marulanda on the roadside. She was physically unharmed but in deep shock. Mane Díaz, however, was forced onto a motorcycle and ferried up into the dense, cloud-covered slopes of the Serranía del Perijá, an impenetrable mountain corridor long used by criminal syndicates and insurgent fronts.
Over 200 specialized commandos, helicopter gunships, and trained scent hounds mobilized under Operation Barrancas. Colombian Director of Police General William Salamanca personally arrived on the ground to coordinate search efforts. Meanwhile, in England, Luis Díaz was pulled from Liverpool's matchday squad against Nottingham Forest. Back in Colombia, his hometown took to the streets in white shirts, demanding the return of a man who had trained hundreds of impoverished local children free of charge.
