When both players reached the NBA, their careers evolved in radically different environments.

Aminu entered the league first, selected 8th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2010 NBA Draft. Traded to the New Orleans Hornets as a key piece in the Chris Paul blockbuster deal in December 2011, Aminu developed into a rugged 3-and-D forward. His peak professional seasons came with the Portland Trail Blazers between 2015 and 2019, where he started 270 games, anchoring Terry Stotts' defensive wing rotations alongside Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. On the international stage, Aminu represented Nigeria's national team (D'Tigers) at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, cementing his standing in international FIBA basketball.

Shumpert entered the association a year later, taken 17th overall by the New York Knicks in the 2011 NBA Draft. He quickly captured NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2012 behind his defensive discipline. Traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in January 2015, Shumpert reached four consecutive NBA Finals, playing an indispensable defensive role off the bench during the Cavaliers' historic 2016 championship run.
