What is the story behind Who Were Diego Rivera's Children? Complete Biographies, Mothers, and Legacies Explained? Read our comprehensive breakdown here.

Rivera spent much of the 1910s in Paris immersed in the bohemian quarters of Montparnasse. There he met Russian printmaker and painter Angelina Beloff in 1909. The couple entered a common-law marriage that lasted a decade, working through deep poverty exacerbated by World War I. In 1916, Beloff gave birth to Rivera’s firstborn child, Diego Rivera Jr., affectionately nicknamed "Dieguito."

Their Parisian flat was notoriously drafty and poorly heated. In the bitter winter of 1917, during a widespread outbreak of influenza and respiratory complications across wartime Europe, the infant fell gravely ill with bronchial pneumonia. Despite Beloff’s desperate attempts to nurse him through the freeze, Dieguito died at just fourteen months old. The loss shattered the household. Rivera channeled his grief into frantic painting, growing increasingly distant from Beloff before leaving Europe permanently for Mexico in 1921, effectively abandoning the woman who had stood beside him through his most austere artistic years.
