By James H. Sterling
While It's Me, Jessica remains an internet myth, the film generating its visuals represents a major milestone for genre cinema. Following her dramatic Oscar win in 2022, she avoided typical franchise routes, choosing instead to collaborate with bold indie directors.
Other Mommy pushes that artistic boundary. Early footage confirms that the film avoids cheap digital effects, leaning into physical contortionists and practical body horror. The much-discussed spider-walking scene required zero computer-generated body doubles, relying on practical stunt work and Chastain's physical performance.
Early screenings and promotional materials point toward an unsettling exploration of maternal identity and psychological decomposition. The film trades on dread rather than standard jump scares, explaining why snippets of the footage felt right at home inside the eerie, surreal visual palette of internet horror memes.
