Everything You Need to Know About Milly Alcock’s Smile and the Online Debate
By David Miller
The initial wave of trolling surrounding Alcock’s appearance produced an immediate, organized counter-reaction across social media. On TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), user-generated video essays dissecting the double standards applied to female franchise stars accumulated tens of millions of views. Commentators contrasted the hyper-critical evaluation of Alcock's mouth with the praise routinely given to male actors who display crooked, chipped, or naturally uneven teeth.
In fan communities dedicated to Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s acclaimed 2021, 2022 graphic novel run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, defenders pointed out that Kara Zor-El is not a pampered socialite. She is an orphaned survivor raised on a fractured shard of Krypton who lived through genocide and brutal isolation. Having an actress with fierce, unconventional, and grounded features aligns far better with that specific narrative arc than casting someone who looks like a digital rendering.
James Gunn himself doubled down on the casting decision, repeatedly highlighting Alcock’s audition tapes and her ability to capture both profound vulnerability and terrifying strength. Gunn’s public endorsement reinforced an important precedent: major creative directors at top studios are choosing dramatic capability over plastic perfection.
