The indigenous category, Adivasi Janajati, is not a monolith. It covers communities with disparate origins, customs, and economic outcomes.

The Newar culture represents a unique anthropological case study. Inhabiting the fertile bowl of the Kathmandu Valley, Newars built the classical architecture, temples, and trade networks that defined pre-modern Nepal. Uniquely among indigenous groups, Newars developed their own internal caste system featuring both Hindu and Buddhist wings, encompassing hereditary priests (Gubhaju and Deubhaju) down to artisan guilds. Their language, Nepal Bhasa, preserves classical literature and theater distinct from the Khas-dominated administrative apparatus.

To the east, the Kirat Rai Limbu confederation claims an ancient ancestral lineage chronicled in indigenous religious oral epics called the Mundhum. Their religious practices center on nature worship, ancestor veneration, and sacred animism, practiced alongside Buddhist or Hindu elements.

In the mid-western hills, Gurung and Magar populations formed the historic spine of the British, Indian, and Nepali military units. Magars, representing 6.9% of the country, constitute the single largest indigenous nationality in Nepal. Their villages historically maintained distinct shamanic traditions (Dhami-Jhankri) alongside Tibetan Buddhism.

Higher along the northern alpine borders lies the Sherpa heritage. Numbering just under 115,000 individuals, Sherpas migrated from eastern Tibet roughly 500 years ago. Their culture is rooted in Nyingma Tibetan Buddhism, high-altitude pastoralism, and mountaineering skill. Despite international recognition, Sherpas represent less than 0.5% of the national population, illustrating the vast gap between foreign perception and demographic reality.
