The 'F*** You Messi' Meme Explained: Meaning, Origins, and Top Reactions
By Chloe Bennett
Q1: Who originally said the viral "F*** You Messi" quote?
The viral audio originated from an intense EA Sports FIFA streaming broadcast where an online player suffered a crushing, late-game defeat to an opponent using a high-rated Lionel Messi card. Although often mistakenly attributed to streamers like IShowSpeed or AngryGinge due to viral video edits, the audio comes from an earlier grassroots gaming stream clipped by the community.
Q2: Is the meme used out of genuine hatred toward Lionel Messi?
No. Within football meme culture, the phrase is used almost entirely as satire or affectionate frustration. It highlights Messi's uncanny ability to break opposing teams' hearts, functioning as an inverted compliment regarding his clutch performances and historic dominance.
Q3: Why did the audio go viral on TikTok instead of staying on Twitch?
The audio possessed high acoustic volume, sharp comedic timing, and zero background noise, making it ideal for the TikTok soundboard catalog. Short-form creators quickly paired it with non-football videos showing everyday failures, broadening its appeal far beyond sports fans.
Q4: How did Cristiano Ronaldo fans contribute to the meme's spread?
Partisan fan accounts frequently weaponized the audio during soccer Twitter banter and post-match debates. It became a stock reaction under Messi highlight packages, used to mock the genuine frustration felt by rival fan bases over the years.
