What Was Dubsmash? the Rise and Sudden Disappearance of Tiktok's Earliest Rival
Dubsmash’s resurgence attracted Silicon Valley buyers seeking an entry point into the lucrative short-form video sector. In late 2020, Reddit completed an outright acquisition of the company for an undisclosed sum, bringing the entire leadership and engineering team onboard. At the time of purchase, Reddit executives stated that their primary goal was to integrate Dubsmash’s video-editing infrastructure and recording capabilities directly into Reddit’s desktop and mobile apps.
Independent operation continued briefly, but the dual-track strategy did not last. On November 23, 2021, Reddit announced that Dubsmash would be permanently deactivated. On February 22, 2022, the standalone app disappeared from both the Apple App Store and Google Play, while its central servers were switched off permanently.
Reddit successfully ported the backend video architecture into its primary app, yet the community itself evaporated overnight. Creators did not migrate to Reddit’s discussion boards; they scattered across Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok. The shutdown reinforced a persistent pattern across the tech industry: acquiring a platform for its technical patents or codebase almost always destroys the fragile human subculture that gave the product its value.
