Why Your New Tiktok Sign up Might Be Blocked: the Sudden Wave of Under-14 Account Bans
Every time an online platform builds a higher wall, cybercriminals build a ladder next to it. The sudden wave of account suspensions and onboarding failures has created an ideal environment for online fraud. Threat researchers at Malwarebytes documented a massive spike in targeted social engineering attacks mimicking platform compliance portals.
The scam begins with a panic-inducing email, text message, or automated social media notification: "Your TikTok account will be permanently terminated due to age verification non-compliance within 24 hours." Panicked teenagers and confused parents click the provided URL, landing on a cloned portal that looks indistinguishable from an official platform page.
These fake verification websites prompt users to upload high-resolution scans of driver's licenses, passports, or school IDs, along with phone numbers and passwords. Instead of submitting materials to ByteDance trust-and-safety teams, victims hand unencrypted identity documents directly to criminal syndicates specializing in synthetic identity theft. Real identity verification workflows take place inside the mobile application settings, never via arbitrary external domains sent through SMS alerts or unverified email addresses.
