By Sarah Jenkins
Q1: Why did Usher pause his Boston concert?
Usher paused his Past, Present, Future Tour concert at Boston’s TD Garden after spotting former BET 106 & Park host Free Marie Wright sitting in the lower level. He stopped the music to personally embrace her, thank her for her early career advocacy, and lead the arena in an ovation.
Q2: What was Free Marie Wright's role on BET?
Marie Antoinette Wright, known professionally as Free, was the original co-host of BET’s flagship music countdown show 106 & Park alongside AJ Calloway from its inception in 2000 until 2005. She served as a primary cultural tastemaker for urban music during that period.
Q3: What does Free Marie Wright do now?
Wright is a prominent radio host on Boston’s Hot 96.9, where she co-hosts the morning drive-time show The Get Up Crew. She also leads community mentorship and philanthropic efforts throughout the greater Boston area.
Q4: Did Usher and Free date in the 2000s?
No. While online gossip occasionally circulated due to their warm on-camera rapport during promotional visits to BET, both have consistently described their bond as one of deep professional respect, mutual admiration, and enduring friendship.
