Mariposa’s departure leaves an immediate vacuum in Honolulu’s fine dining market. Finding accessible ocean-view dining outside of crowded Waikiki hotel strips is difficult on Oahu. Mariposa provided an airy, open-air lanai without the chaotic valet lines of beachfront resorts.
The closure displaces experienced front-of-house staff, sommeliers, and back-of-house culinary workers, many of whom spent over a decade with the company. Local food distributors who supplied the kitchen with fresh island produce and local catch will also feel the drop in orders.
Ala Moana Center now faces the complex challenge of re-tenanting an enormous multi-level box. The third-floor lanai space holds some of the best Pacific ocean views in the entire shopping center. Real estate analysts expect mall owner Brookfield Properties to eventually divide the department store footprint, carving out the upper terrace for independent restaurant groups capable of operating late into the evening.
