Why Is Everyone Searching Tuna Sub Spelled Backwards? the Viral Joke Explained
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Short-form video algorithms prioritize two specific metrics: watch time and comment volume. The "tuna sub" trend was engineered to maximize both without requiring expensive production setups.
Creators began recording themselves asking mothers, grandparents, and retail workers to spell the sandwich order backwards. In dozens of viral clips uploaded across June 2023 and sustained throughout the following year, the format followed a rigid structure. The video opened with a curiosity hook ("Watch my mom realize what she just said"), built tension as the subject slowly assembled the letters, and delivered the auditory payoff.
Viewers who did not initially understand the gag immediately flooded the comments asking for an explanation. Each confused comment prompted dozens of replies, signaling high engagement to the recommendation engine. The algorithm interpreted this rapid-fire interaction as quality content, pushing the clips onto millions of For You pages worldwide.
