Where to Watch Stranger Things: the First Shadow: Streaming Date & Netflix Scoop
By Alexander Ross
Written by Kate Trefry from an original story developed alongside the Duffer Brothers and Jack Thorne, the play is an indispensable lore foundation. Set in Hawkins in 1959, the plot focuses on a younger cohort of town residents long before the events of 1983. Familiar figures like Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, and Bob Newby walk the halls of Hawkins High alongside Henry Creel, the troubled newcomer whose dark trajectory shapes the series.
The play reveals the mechanical roots of Creel's transformation into Vecna. It unpacks the mysterious Nevada incident that altered Henry's psychic frequency, his complex relationship with his parents, and the initial experiments that piqued Dr. Martin Brenner's scientific obsession. Because the script directly anchors the logic of the Upside Down, the Duffer Brothers have repeatedly stated that understanding the stage show changes how viewers interpret the final television season.
