Rare Family Photos: Hal Linden with His Wife Frances Martin and Their Four Children Through the Decades
Working on Barney Miller meant enduring punishing production days. Show creators Danny Arnold and Theodore J. Flick often rewrote scripts late into the evening, forcing the ensemble cast to tape scenes at 2:00 AM. Despite the brutal schedule, Linden made it a personal rule to return home for family dinners whenever humanly possible.
Later in life, Linden expanded his focus to grandparenthood. With four grown children, the family welcomed multiple grandchildren, bringing a lively second chapter to his later years. In retrospective interviews, Linden consistently noted that winning Emmys, receiving Tony statuettes, or walking red carpets never held a candle to holding his newborn grandchildren or sitting down for holiday meals with his extended family. The presence of his grandchildren became an anchor for him, particularly following Frances Martin's passing in 2010.
