During Shawn’s years in captivity, Pam and Craig Akers refused to surrender. They spent their life savings, remortgaged property, and established the Shawn Hornbeck Search and Rescue Foundation. The non-profit transformed their personal tragedy into an organized rescue operation, coordinating hundreds of volunteers, dogs, and ATVs to search for other missing children across the Midwest.

Even after Shawn came home, the foundation operated for several years, providing resources to desperate families navigating similar nightmares. Over time, maintaining a full-scale non-profit placed enormous emotional and financial burdens on the household.

In August 2019, Craig Akers died at the age of 62. Craig had been Shawn’s fiercest public defender and emotional anchor, a man who spent four years wearing a missing-person pin on his collar every day until his stepson was recovered. Craig’s passing marked a final transition for the family. The foundation closed its day-to-day operations, allowing Pam and Shawn to step back entirely from missing-person coordination and focus on their family.
