What Does Tiktok’s 'Make Your Day' Really Mean? the Origin of the Global Slogan
To understand the genius of the tagline, compare it to the mission statements of legacy platforms. Facebook promised to "give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together." Twitter sold itself as the global town square. YouTube wanted to "give everyone a voice."
Every single one of those mission statements created immediate regulatory and civic liabilities. If your goal is connecting the world, you are directly culpable when your software accelerates sectarian violence, election manipulation, or political polarization. A public square demands moderation, civility standards, and democratic responsibility.
TikTok sidestepped that trap by narrowing its promise to subjective individual satisfaction. "Make Your Day" makes no claims about truth, community, or public discourse. If you open the software and laugh for three minutes while waiting in line at the grocery store, the software has fulfilled its mission. The responsibility for the world's problems disappears; the transaction is purely affective.
