Jasmine Richardson Trial Evidence: Messages, Plans, and Courtroom Records
Defense attorney Shannon Prithipaul argued that Richardson suffered from dependent personality traits and fell victim to psychological manipulation by an adult predator. Steinke, who drank heavily and had a history of unstable relationships, was depicted as the driving force behind the violence. The defense team leaned on psychological evaluations indicating that a twelve-year-old brain lacks the emotional maturity to resist grooming.
The prosecution dismantled that narrative using Richardson’s own schoolmates. Several middle-school friends took the stand, recounting chilling conversations that took place in the days leading up to the murders. One classmate testified that Richardson explicitly told her she was going to kill her parents so she could be with Steinke. When the friend treated the statement as a joke, Richardson insisted she was serious.
Under cross-examination, detectives presented Richardson’s post-arrest letters written to Steinke from her juvenile detention facility. In one letter, decorated with hand-drawn hearts, Richardson wrote: "I will never regret what happened, because it brought us together." These exhibits established that Richardson felt no remorse immediately following the crime, gutting the assertion of adult coercion.
