For more than six months following Noriega's death, the case status remained listed as "deferred" by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Deferred classifications occur when an autopsy requires specialized laboratory testing, such as toxicology screenings and microscopic tissue analysis, before an investigator can sign the death certificate.

On December 20, 2022, the coroner closed the case. The autopsy confirmed the primary cause of death as the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, lorazepam (Ativan), and alprazolam (Xanax). The report also noted recent use of clonazepam, another prescription benzodiazepine, though it was not listed as a direct primary cause. The manner of death was formally documented as accidental.

The findings shed light on the fatal interaction between benzodiazepines and synthetic opioids. Benzodiazepines depress the central nervous system, slowing heart rate and respiration. When combined with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin, the sedative effect on the brain's respiratory center multiplies exponentially. The victim simply stops breathing. Counterfeit prescription pills circulating on illicit markets often contain lethal doses of illicit fentanyl without the user's knowledge, an ongoing crisis that public health agencies continue to combat nationwide.
