Updated 2026 Process: New Faster Steps to Activate At&T Prepaid and Transfer Your Number
Carrying your current phone number to a new carrier falls under federal mobile number portability mandates, but regulatory safeguards have tightened significantly. Wireless carriers no longer permit transfers using simple billing passwords or static account PINs. Doing so left customers vulnerable to unauthorized port-outs and credential-stuffing attacks.
To transfer a line without a service interruption, request an account transfer PIN from your current wireless carrier prior to starting setup on the AT&T side. This temporary six-digit security code remains valid for a limited window, typically between four and seven days. Generate this key through your existing carrier's official mobile application or by dialing specialized service codes such as *PORT.
When prompted during setup, input your existing telephone number, previous carrier account number, and the active transfer PIN. Crucially, do not cancel your previous mobile subscription before the transfer finishes. Terminating your plan prematurely releases the phone number back into the carrier pool, rendering it permanently unrecoverable. Once AT&T signals a successful handshake, your old provider automatically closes out that specific line.
