Unpacking the Paper Trail: Did Peter Lenahan Work with Tim Berners-Lee?

Seeking clarity on Unpacking the Paper Trail: Did Peter Lenahan Work with Tim Berners-Lee? Here is the key details in simple terms.

Tim Berners-Lee submitted his landmark proposal, "Information Management: A Proposal," in March 1989 while working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research). His supervisor, Mike Sendall, famously annotated the document with the words "Vague but exciting." By late 1990, Berners-Lee had written the code for the first Web browser and editor on a NeXTcube computer, running the world's first web server at `info.cern.ch`.

CERN maintains meticulous personnel and project records. The CERN document server contains scanned internal telephone books, division memos for the Data Handling (DD) and Computing and Networks (CN) divisions, and visitor logbooks spanning 1988 through 1995. Peter Lenahan does not appear in any of these rosters. He is absent from CERN contractor listings, fellow records, and internal technical memos.

The earliest documented collaborators on the World Wide Web project at CERN are well cataloged:

• Robert Cailliau: The Belgian systems engineer who co-authored the formal funding proposal in November 1990 and organized the First International World-Wide Web Conference at CERN in May 1994.
• Nicola Pellow: An undergraduate math intern who wrote the Line Mode Browser, making the Web accessible across basic dumb terminals.
• Jean-François Groff: A telecom contractor who collaborated on the libwww shared code library and early protocol specifications.

The historical record at CERN is closed and unambiguous. Lenahan was never stationed at the Meyrin or Prévessin sites during the Web’s development.
