Tiktok Reaches Historic Alabama Settlement: New Youth Limits and Age Rules Set
A key focus of the consent decree is upgrading TikTok Family Pairing. Historically, parental control suites suffered from friction: parents were required to maintain active TikTok profiles, manually link accounts via dynamic QR codes, and navigate confusing nested menus to manage basic protections. As a result, adoption remained low among non-technical guardians.
The revised platform mechanics streamline supervision. Parents can now configure administrative controls without maintaining a public TikTok presence, establishing screen allowances, filtering content keywords, and blocking live-stream engagement directly through authenticated email tokens or operating-system-level hooks. Guardians also receive weekly diagnostic digests detailing aggregate view time, search query categories, and any reported interactions involving unknown adult profiles.
Child online privacy protections now include automated data-scrubbing mandates. Telemetry data gathered from teen accounts, such as geolocation logs, biometric facial signatures, and clipboard text, cannot be sold to external data brokers or used to train third-party advertising algorithms. This constraint brings TikTok into strict alignment with emerging state-level digital safety frameworks, eliminating monetized behavioral profiling on minors.
