Understanding Olivia’s childhood requires understanding the catastrophic losses that preceded her birth. In August 1997, Peart’s 19-year-old daughter, Selena Taylor, died in a single-vehicle highway accident near Brighton, Ontario. Barely ten months later, in June 1998, Jacqueline Taylor, his common-law partner of 23 years, succumbed to cancer. Peart chronicled this devastation in his memoir Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, describing himself as a ghost wandering across North and Central America on a BMW motorcycle, stripped of purpose and identity.

Healing came gradually. Photographer Carrie Nuttall entered Peart’s life through a mutual acquaintance in Los Angeles, and the couple married in September 2000. Peart eventually relocated to Southern California, establishing a permanent base in Santa Monica. When Nuttall gave birth to Olivia Louise Peart in August 2009, Peart was 56 years old. Longtime bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson later observed that becoming a father again completely altered Peart's perspective, restoring a domestic warmth he thought had vanished forever.

Peart took fatherhood seriously. Rather than handing daily routines to staff, he cooked breakfast, handled school runs, and read voraciously with his daughter. Writing in his travel and essay collections, he occasionally referenced simple neighborhood walks and bookstore visits with Olivia, consistently withholding any intrusive personal identifiers to protect her anonymity.
