By 2017, the Indian entertainment ecosystem had moved rapidly toward smartphone consumption. Balaji Telefilms responded by creating ALTBalaji (later rebranded as the ALTT streaming platform), using the recognizable horror brand as a flagship subscription driver.

Ragini MMS Returns Season 1 broke television conventions with its uncensored digital approach. The series marked the high-profile digital debut of Nishant Singh Malkani, who portrayed the central character Raj opposite Karishma Sharma. Malkani brought strong television discipline to the role before transitioning back to broadcast daily soaps in late 2018. The episodic format retained the signature haunted-manor trope while amping up college drama, urban legends, and youth-oriented suspense.

Season 2 carried that momentum forward in late 2019. Headlined by reality television stars Divya Agarwal and Varun Sood, the plot centered on a wild girls' trip unraveling at a cursed hotel. Sunny Leone also made a high-profile cameo appearance, connecting the streaming edition back to its box-office glory days.
