The Complete Guide to Percy Jackson Author Rick Riordan: Books in Order, New Series, and Screen Shows

If you are tracking The Complete Guide to Percy Jackson Author Rick Riordan: Books in Order, New Series, and Screen Shows, here is a clear overview you shouldn't miss.

For more than a decade, the relationship between Rick Riordan and Hollywood stood as an infamous case study in botched intellectual property adaptation. The 2010 film version of The Lightning Thief, directed by Chris Columbus, aged the characters up to high schoolers, discarded key plot arcs, and drew public ire from fans. Riordan famously published open letters detailing his efforts to warn studio executives that the script alienated the books' primary demographic.

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, Riordan saw an opening to reclaim the property. Rather than licensing the rights passively, Riordan and his wife, Rebecca, signed on as executive producers and co-writers for the Disney+ episodic series. Casting Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, the production made a deliberate choice to return the characters to their original middle-school ages.

Premiering in late December 2023, the first season garnered over 13.3 million views globally in its first six days, demonstrating the massive generational demand for an authentic interpretation. The production team moved quickly into developing Season 2, tackling The Sea of Monsters with expanded budgets and location shoots in Vancouver. Riordan’s direct involvement established a new standard for author oversight in modern streaming deals.
