The Complete Ge Fridge Ice Maker Repair Guide: Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
When plastic drive gears strip inside the head or the internal mold heater burns out, sourcing internal gears rarely makes economic sense. Performing an ice maker assembly replacement is faster, more reliable, and restores the factory baseline.
Start by killing power at the home breaker panel. Clear the top freezer shelf and unlatch the bin bucket to access the unit. Most GE units hang on two upper 1/4-inch hex-head sheet metal screws, supported by one stabilizing screw along the lower bracket. Loosen the top screws three turns; do not remove them completely, as the chassis uses keyhole slots designed for drop-in mounting.
Back out the bottom mounting screw entirely. Lift the chassis upward to release it from the keyhole brackets. Carefully ease the assembly away from the wall to expose the wiring harness. Modern units use a locking wire harness clip with six to eight pins. Depress the central locking tab firmly and pull the connectors straight apart without twisting.
Inspect the fill cup on the replacement unit. Ensure the plastic receiver funnel aligns with the rubber fill tube protruding from the freezer wall. Slide the wire harness securely into the replacement chassis until the clip clicks. Align the assembly over the two loosened wall screws, press down to lock the keyholes, and reinstall the lower hex screw. Restore power, wait for the chime, and cycle the manual shutoff switch to initiate the self-test sweep.
