Taste Test: We Tried Sonic's New Banana Dirty Dr Pepper and Fall Soda Lineup
The headliner of the seasonal drop is the Banana Dirty Dr Pepper, a combination of original Dr Pepper, sweet cream, and banana-flavored syrup. Visually, the drink arrives with a dramatic, marbled cream cascade against the dark amber soda, though that gradient collapses into an opaque brown within two minutes.
The first sip delivers an immediate blast of confectionary banana. Sonic uses a syrup profile reminiscent of yellow Runts candy or artificial banana pudding rather than fresh fruit. When paired with the 23 botanical flavors of Dr Pepper, the synthetic banana note dominates the front palate, completely masking the soda’s natural peppery bite. The sweet cream introduces a rich mouthfeel, but it struggles with thermal stability. In an ambient temperature of 94°F, the cold foam-style dairy quickly breaks down, leaving an oily sheen across the surface of the cup.
The secondary additions to the late-summer lineup fare slightly better. The classic Sweet Cream Dr Pepper with coconut cream mirrors the traditional "dirty" blueprint far more faithfully. The tropical fat in the coconut cuts through the aggressive carbonation, rounding out the cola’s sharp edges without creating an cloying aftertaste. Yet across the board, sugar levels are punishingly high; a medium dirty pour easily sails past 65 grams of sugar before ice displacement.
