Alpha Dog Cast Vs. Real People: Side-by-Side Comparison of the Chilling 2006 Drama
By David Miller
The tragedy began in West Hills, an affluent pocket of Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley. Jesse James Hollywood was a mid-level marijuana dealer who operated out of suburban tract homes, backed by his father Jack Hollywood's connections. Hollywood carried himself like an untouchable underworld figure, surrounding himself with loyal childhood acquaintances. When Ben Markowitz, an associate and erratic enforcer, refused to settle a $1,200 narcotics balance, Hollywood decided on violent retaliation.
On August 6, 2000, Hollywood and two crew members spotted Ben's younger half-brother, Nicholas, walking down a residential street. They shoved the teenager into a borrowed van in broad daylight. Nicholas had no direct role in his brother's financial disputes. He was collateral, grabbed impulsively to force Ben's hand. Instead of hiding the boy in a basement, the crew drove him ninety miles north to Santa Barbara, where they spent several days treating him like a house guest at pool parties and motel rooms. The captive teenagers drank beer, smoked cannabis, and lounged around while the adults weighed the felony kidnapping charges hanging over them.
That false sense of security sealed Nicholas's fate. Realizing that releasing the boy would trigger mandatory life sentences for kidnapping under California penal codes, Hollywood made the final command from afar. In the early hours of August 9, crew member Ryan Hoyt drove Nicholas up into the mountains to a remote trail known as the Lizard's Mouth. Nicholas was bound with duct tape, struck with a shovel, and shot nine times with a semi-automatic handgun before being buried in a shallow, hastily dug grave.
