Street View Proof: the Funniest Verified Road Names Across the Us and Uk
By David Miller
While American oddities usually stem from pioneer humor or macabre local legends, unusual road names in the UK reflect centuries of linguistic evolution. Middle English, Old Norse, and Anglo-Saxon dialects leave behind street labels that sound utterly scandalous to modern ears.
Take York’s Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, one of the shortest streets in the city. The name dates back to 1505, when it was recorded as Whitnourwhatnourgate, loosely translating to "What a street!" In Yorkshire dialect, the phrase evolved through folk etymology into a tongue-twister. Today, dropping the Street View marker onto Colliergate reveals a tiny corridor dominated by a sturdy wall-mounted sign.
In South London, Ha-Ha Road in Greenwich creates immediate double-takes for foreign drivers. The road is named after a recessed landscape design feature, a sunken ditch with a retaining wall designed to keep livestock off manicured estate grounds without breaking sightlines. The visual joke of a ditch surprising approaching strollers gave the barrier its name, and the adjacent roadway kept it permanently.
Other British corridors carry coarser baggage. Bell End in Rowley Regis gained national attention in 2018 when a petition circulated by incoming residents claimed the moniker caused children to be bullied and degraded local house prices. Longtime locals organized an immediate counter-petition, arguing that historic local toponyms shouldn't be erased for delicate modern sensibilities. The preservationists won handily; the council left the sign standing.
