Solving the Upside Down 'White Goo' Mystery Around Nancy and Jonathan
By Elena Rostova
Visual mysteries were not the only source of friction between Nancy and Jonathan as the series barreled toward its endgame. Netflix's rollout of Season 5 episodes sparked heated debate over the couple's shifting dynamic, particularly around Jonathan's awkward attempt to address their future. As reported by the Daily Record following the mid-season batch, fans found themselves split over a proposal scene heavy with emotional hesitation.
Jonathan, burdened by family responsibilities and college anxieties, fumbled toward commitment. Nancy, consumed by the existential threat over Hawkins, kept her eyes locked on survival. The scene highlighted an uncomfortable truth: their shared trauma forged an unbreakable bond, but trauma does not automatically build a stable domestic life. Natalia Dyer played the beat with razor-sharp restraint, conveying a woman who refuses to be boxed into 1980s domesticity while literal monsters claw through the floorboards.
