By Sophia Al-Mansoor
Online anger rarely stays contained within municipal borders. As internet users scrambled to vent their fury on public review platforms, a severe case of digital mistaken identity unfolded. Digital mobs targeted Skyline Dental in Chicago, Illinois, mistaking the Midwestern practice for the California dental clinic at the heart of the scandal.
According to coverage by WGN-TV, the Chicago dental office was hit with hundreds of defamatory 1-star Google reviews, harassing telephone calls, and aggressive social media messages. Staff members who had never set foot in California suddenly found themselves defending their livelihoods against accusations of partisan medical abuse. Google and Yelp eventually placed temporary freezes on review submissions across several similarly named practices to contain the harassment, highlighting the collateral damage caused by coordinated online review bombing.
