Remembering Nims Dai: His Legendary 14 Peaks Legacy, Winter K2 Feat, and Lasting Impact
By 2020, every 8,000-meter peak had been climbed in winter except one: K2. Rising along the Pakistan-China border, K2 in January is an abyss of hurricane-force winds, minus-60-degree temperatures, and black ice. Decades of attempts by the world's most hardened mountaineers had yielded dozens of casualties and zero summits.
On January 16, 2021, Purja joined forces with Mingma Gyalje Sherpa and a unified team of ten Nepalese mountaineers. Recognizing the historical weight of the moment, they paused ten meters below the summit ridge. Linking arms, they stepped onto the apex of K2 together while singing the Nepali national anthem.
Purja revealed days later that he had completed the entire winter summit push without supplemental oxygen, answering purists who had long critiqued his heavy use of support systems. The achievement stood out because it rejected individual conquest. It was constructed deliberately to elevate the collective reputation of Nepalese climbers on the global stage.
