Remembering Coach John Thompson: the Chronology of His Final Days and National Tributes
Thompson’s impact stretches well into the current sports landscape. During his tenure, Georgetown saw a graduation rate of 97 percent among players who stayed all four years. He kept a deflated basketball on his office desk. The message was plain: basketball will eventually run out of air, and your education must sustain you.
He was also ahead of his time on athlete rights. Thompson openly criticized the NCAA for generating hundreds of millions of dollars on the backs of unpaid teenagers, anticipating the legal shifts that ultimately brought Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) freedoms to modern sports. When he took on notorious Washington, D.C. drug kingpin Rayful Edmond in the late 1980s, summoning Edmond to his office and ordering him to stay away from Hoyas players, Thompson proved he would stake his physical safety on the protection of his roster.
