The encounter took place during an April 2021 broadcast by software engineer turned Twitch streamer Kitboga. For seven years, Kitboga has stood at the center of the YouTube scambaiting community, using real-time voice changers, custom virtual machines, and fake online tools to trap transnational call center rings on the phone for hours.

In this specific operation, Kitboga adopted the persona of Edna, an elderly, easily confused grandmother. The caller went by the alias "Steve," a voice from an illicit call center operating out of India. Steve spent hours executing a classic fake refund scam. He claimed that Edna had accidentally received a $500 overpayment on her computer, money she owed his employer immediately. To settle the debt without alerting the authorities, Steve demanded that she drive to Target, purchase physical Google Play card vouchers, and read the scratched-off claim numbers to him directly.

Kitboga played along with meticulous care. He fed fake engine noise through his microphone, pretended to struggle with store clerks, and eventually returned to his desk with dummy card numbers. Steve stayed on the line throughout, salivating over a guaranteed payday. The script called for Edna to surrender the balance. Kitboga decided to rewrite it.
