Pulling Ram from a Running Pc: Real Hardware Destruction Tested
Memory configuration demands strict mechanical and electrical discipline. Upgrading or removing desktop memory takes less than five minutes when following the industry standard protocol:
Begin by shutting down the operating system fully via software. Once the system powers off, flip the rocker switch on the back of the power supply unit to the "0" (Off) position, and unplug the AC power cord from the wall. Press and hold the computer's front chassis power button for 15 to 20 seconds; this discharges the residual power held inside the large filtering capacitors across the motherboard and graphics card.
Ground your hands by touching an unpainted metal section of the computer case or wearing an antistatic wrist strap. Push both retention latches outward until the module levers upward on its own. Lift the stick straight up along its vertical axis without rocking it sideways. When inserting a new stick, line up the asymmetrical alignment notch on the bottom edge with the key in the slot, press downward firmly on both outer corners until the side latches snap inward automatically, and plug the system back into the wall.
