Project Hail Mary Ending Explained: Does Rocky Die and What Next?
Humanity does not perish in Grace’s absence. Before turning the Hail Mary around to save Rocky, Grace packages the research findings, breeding parameters, and samples of Taumoeba-82 into the four autonomous mini-probes known as the Beetles (named John, Paul, George, and Ringo).
Equipped with independent Astrophage drives and programmed with direct navigational coordinates to Earth, the Beetles fire into realspace. They cross interstellar space at relativistic velocities, carrying the exact biological countermeasure required to clear the Petrova line and halt the dimming of the sun.
Decades later, living on Rocky’s planet, Grace receives physical confirmation that the Beetles reached their target. Eridian astronomers track Sol's light output using orbital telescope arrays. They inform Grace that Sol's luminosity has returned to 100% of its normal baseline. The mission succeeded across every parameter. Eva Stratt's desperate project worked, saving billions of humans who will never know that their savior chose exile on an ammonia-rich rock light-years away.
