Macbook Pro Keyboard Backlight Settings: Complete Step-by-Step Visual Walkthrough
For more than a decade, operating key illumination on an Apple portable was straightforward. You tapped the F5 and F6 keys on the top row, instantly raising or lowering illumination by sixteen distinct step increments. The system offered tactile, instant feedback without opening an application or dragging an on-screen slider.
That predictability shattered in 2016. Apple introduced the Touch Bar, sweeping away physical function buttons on premium notebooks. Key illumination adjustments were buried behind a collapsible Control Strip. If the Touch Bar froze, a common complaint across user forums between 2016 and 2020, users lost immediate access to illumination controls.
When Apple transitioned to M-series chips and restored the full-height physical function row on the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models in late 2021, the company chose not to restore the old backlight icons to F5 and F6. Instead, those keys were assigned to Dictation and Do Not Disturb (Focus). Control over key illumination was permanently transferred to software interfaces inside macOS.
