Nfl Expansion Guide: Everything to Know About New Franchises, Cities, and Realignment
A 34-team league fractures the geometric perfection of the NFL's four-team division setup. You cannot divide 34 teams cleanly into eight divisions. Expanding the field forces the competition committee to pick between two radical structural overhauls:
- Two Conferences of 17 Teams: Each conference breaks down into two unequal divisions (such as two nine-team and two eight-team groupings), eliminating classic four-team regional rivalries.
- Six Divisions of Five or Six Teams: Reorganizing the entire league into three divisions per conference (East, Central, West). This format mirrors Major League Baseball, bringing back five-team groupings and reducing guaranteed annual games against historic divisional rivals.
Schedule restructuring becomes mandatory. Under an expanded 18-game calendar, teams would play eight or ten divisional games, six rotating conference games, and two cross-conference showcase matchups.
If a permanent London franchise enters the mix, the league will likely mandate home-and-away scheduling blocks. The European club would spend three to four consecutive weeks on the road in the United States, operating out of a dedicated domestic training facility, followed by a month-long homestand in the UK where traveling American clubs receive a mandatory bye week following their transatlantic flight.
