Master the Incline Push-up: Proper Form, Variations, and Common Mistakes

Read in-depth updates regarding Master the Incline Push-up: Proper Form, Variations, and Common Mistakes.

Dialing in your incline push up form begins with hand width. Set your palms slightly wider than shoulder-width apart on the edge of the elevated surface. Placing hands excessively wide reduces total active range of motion and puts harsh shear force on the anterior shoulder capsule. Your thumbs should align roughly with the lower half of your sternum as your chest touches the surface.

Elbow positioning demands careful attention. Flaring the elbows outward at a 90-degree angle to the torso invites shoulder impingement and reduces pectoral involvement. Tucking elbows tightly against the ribcage shifts virtually all the work onto the triceps. The optimal compromise is an arrow shape: elbows tracking back at approximately 45 degrees relative to the torso throughout the descent.

For trainees with limited joint mobility, the bench push-up offers substantial wrist pressure relief. On flat surfaces, wrists must bend to a hard 90-degree angle of extension while bearing significant bodyweight. Elevated surfaces change this angle to a less aggressive pitch. Gripping the curved edge of a bench, holding handles, or placing hands on a barbell set in a rack keeps the wrist joint in a neutral, stacked position, shifting load safely into the forearms.
