Martin Scorsese's Marriage History Fact-Checked: from Past Divorces to Helen Morris

Scorsese met his first wife, Laraine Marie Brennan, while both were students at New York University. They married in 1965, long before Hollywood took notice of him. The couple welcomed a daughter, Cathy Scorsese, that same year. Brennan supported Scorsese through student short films and his raw feature debut, Who's That Knocking at My Door. But the strains of an aspiring filmmaker's singular fixation took a heavy toll. By 1971, the marriage had dissolved as Scorsese left New York to carve out a foothold in Los Angeles.
His second marriage was brief and explosive. In 1976, fresh off the Palme d'Or victory for Taxi Driver, Scorsese married writer and journalist Julia Cameron. They had one daughter, Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, born in 1976. The union lasted barely a year. Cameron would later chronicle the sheer intensity of living alongside an auteur driven by manic creative energy and escalating cocaine dependency. The divorce in 1977 was acrimonious, leading to legal skirmishes over custody before settling into mutual distance.
In 1979, Scorsese entered Hollywood royalty by marrying Italian model and actress Isabella Rossellini, the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini. They wed in the small town of Bracciano, Italy. While publicly glamorous, the private reality was strained. Scorsese was recovering from a near-fatal drug overdose in 1978 and throwing himself into the brutal shoot of Raging Bull. Rossellini recently recalled his temper during that period, explaining that the emotional intensity that fueled his masterpieces made ordinary domestic peace nearly impossible. They divorced in 1982.
