Ikea vs Elfa Closet Systems: Side-by-Side Durability and Storage Capacity Tested
By Alexander Ross
The choice between IKEA PAX and Elfa comes down to your home's construction, your timeline, and how you store your clothes. If you live in an apartment or plan to move within three to five years, Elfa is the clear winner. Its hanging track installs with minimal wall damage, adapts easily to changing spaces, and survives disassembly without structural wear. It also outperforms IKEA in spaces with uneven floors or high humidity.
If you own your home, have plumb walls, and want the upscale look of built-in cabinetry, IKEA PAX offers the best value. When anchored properly, its deep frame enclosures, flush Komplement soft-close drawers, and dust-blocking structure deliver custom-closet aesthetics for a fraction of the cost of custom carpentry.
