Joy-Con Full Body Tracking Guide: Setup Steps, Common Problems, and Buyer Advice
Transforming Joy-Cons into functional waist and leg tracking units requires an intricate software bridge. Because SteamVR does not natively recognize Nintendo gamepads as tracking nodes, third-party middleware coordinates communication between the controllers and the headset.
The setup path relies on pairing Joy-Cons via standard Windows Bluetooth, routing their telemetry through specialized tools such as Joycon-Driver or feeder bridges, and feeding that orientation stream directly into the SlimeVR Server. From there, SlimeVR constructs a virtual human skeleton based on user body measurements, such as hip width, upper leg length, and torso height, and calculates estimated joint angles. The resulting synthetic skeletal data feeds into SteamVR as virtual Vive pucks, which VRChat full body tracking reads instantly.
Proper IMU tracker calibration remains critical during initialization. Players must secure the controllers rigidly against their clothing, stand straight in an upright calibration pose, and let the software zero out basic orientation. Any shifting elastic band or loose velcro mount immediately throws off hip and knee alignment in the virtual mirror.
